When it comes to recycling, the rules on preparing and disposing of our recycled products aren't always as clear as we think. Below are some useful tips and advice on how we can ensure we are doing our bit properly:

As we know, recycling is an important part of making sure we are helping the environment and supporting it's many benefits. However, the rules and tips of recycling aren't always as clear as we may think. Below, Green Mark have provided us some tips and advice on how we can make sure we are doing everything we can to ensure our recycling is being prepared and disposed of properly.

It's good to wash!

Why?

The myth is that rinsing our recyclables is a waste of water and energy, which is false. Making sure that food and drink packaging is completely empty and giving them a rinse before recycling is important, as it prevents cross-contamination at the recycling centre.

To crush or not to crush?

Why?

If you like crushing containers, there's something you should know: you really shouldn't, as this could prevent them from being recycled. It makes it more difficult for the recycling centre to segregate the waste.

Make sure to check what you're recycling!

Why?

Here are some examples of things that can't be recycled:

1) Glass cookware
2) Tissues, wet wipes and make-up pads
3) Any paper stained with grease, paint or dirt
4) Sticky notes
5) Crisps packets and sweet wrappers
6) Greeting cards, decorations and wrapping paper
